Colorado Health Care Workers Face Increasingly Violent Threats

It seems that there is no safe place anymore, not even in our local hospitals. Violence against health care workers in Colorado has more than doubled since 2021, according to The Colorado Hospital Association's publication, "Addressing Violence in Colorado Hospitals:"

  • Health care workers have the highest rates of workplace violence injuries. They are five times more likely to be injured than other workers.

  • On average, a nurse is assaulted every 30 minutes. More than 5,200 nurses were assaulted in just the second quarter of 2022.

  • In a one month review, 90% of health care workers had experienced or witnessed violence from a patient or a patient's caregiver.

Sadly, this data is consistent with the alarming rates of criminal victimization in Colorado overall: out of the 22 most populated states, Colorado has the highest criminal victimization rates in the country. Health care workers and their patients are no exception.
