"Slider" crimes occur when a driver leaves their car unlocked, for any reason, but usually while pumping gas. It happens while the car sits empty, a perpetrator either walks up to or drives up side-by-side to the vehicle, "slides" over into the car, steals items or the entire vehicle, and then flees the scene.
Women who are alone seem to be the typical target in this slider crime trend. There is an instance of a female driver being dragged and run over while the thief drives her car away. Atlanta has been hit particularly hard, hence the PSA from the Atlanta Police Department, but similar reports are coming out of numerous metropolitan areas all across the country.
Lock your car doors anytime you exit it. Never leave keys in your car or leave it running without being in the driver's seat. Remember that criminals place no value on your life, and many will not hesitate to use their own weapon or use your car as a weapon against you. As always, situational awareness is the number one key to prevention.
