Self Defense Mindset: Don't Stop, Keep Fighting, Get Out and Survive

24-year old fitness trainer Nashali Alma had zero self defense training when she successfully fought off a would-be rapist in her Florida apartment complex gym in January of 2023. Her mindset is what ultimately translated into her calm demeanor and impressive physical fight using common sense tactics, which gave her victory over the perpetrator.

In her own words, Nashali says this about her life-saving mindset during the attack:

I wasn't really fearful at all. It was more just of me, having that fighter mode, you know to never give up, never stop fighting. It was just me pushing to make sure that I beat his ass, that I get out of the situation, that I get out, and I survive. ... I wasn't really scared, I was just making sure that I got out of there. It was more of just me, like having that fight or flight response, that fighter mode where, 'I'm tough, I'm bigger than you, we're the same size, you're not stronger than me, I'm gonna make sure I get out of this.'
Don't ever stop, don't ever give up, keep fighting. The more stronger you push out, the more you fight back, the more they're gonna stop and be like, 'Damn this girl's a fighter I don't want her.' The more you keep fighting the more that they see that you are scary, that they're like, 'I don't want this.' Don't ever give up, don't stop.

Comprehensive self defense training includes not only physical techniques and principles, but also sound mental preparation. All the physical training and accomplished belt tests in the world won't save a defender who doesn't possess proper mindset when under attack. Controlled aggression and the will to fight under duress don't come naturally to most people; however, it can be developed. As seen by Nashali's unassailable mindset, it is vital in any self-defense situation.
