Ego should never convince anyone to enter into a fight, no matter how advanced a defender's skill set may be. There's always a chance an opponent has a knife that can't be seen and is waiting to be used. In the video situation above, rather than escape an attack which was obviously waiting to happen, our guy in orange willfully engaged and found this out the hard way. He opened himself up and made himself tragically vulnerable. By the time he realized he had been slashed, it was too late. His fate is unknown at the time of this writing, but it's doubtful that he survived.
At WSD, we train our students in Israeli Krav Maga to defend against edged weapon attacks, but we first and foremost vehemently train our student mindsets to avoid, de-escalate, and escape as first lines of defense. Going home safely and unharmed is always the fight that is won.
Only engage and counterattack when there is no other option. One never knows what weapons an attacker has on him or her that can't be seen. Knives are increasingly the easy weapon of choice for malcontents, and no training is needed to hide them, slash with them, and quickly cause fatal injury. If ever forced to engage an attacker who has a knife, proper training will be essential to survive.
